Most New Zealanders don’t need this.

That’s the official position, and we’re not going to argue with it. Sunlight is the main source of vitamin D for most people, and most people here make enough over summer. Here’s how to tell if this is for you.

Made for

Inside most of the day, and rarely out in direct sun

Night shifts, and asleep while the sun’s up

Skin covered when you’re outdoors

Darker or brown skin, which needs more sun to make the same vitamin D

In the south and rarely outside around midday, May to August

Buying in summer? If your days are spent indoors, that doesn’t change with the season.

Skip it

Outside most days, all year. Save your money.

Already on the NoWhey multi. It has 20 µg of D3 plus K1 and K2. Pick one.

Under 18. It’s for adults.

Ask first

On warfarin or another blood thinner. It contains vitamin K. Not unless your doctor agrees.

Prescribed vitamin D or anything like it, thiazide diuretics (water pills), or kidney, parathyroid or blood calcium problems.

Pregnant or breastfeeding. It isn’t a pregnancy supplement.

Older, frail or housebound. Talk to your GP. Funded vitamin D is available on prescription.

Your skin makes it. Glass stops it.

This sun doesn’t count.

UVB doesn’t pass through glass. A sunny desk or a sunny car doesn’t make vitamin D.

JanuaryJuly

6 to 8 minutes in January. 30 to 50 in July.

Time in the sun that may make 1,000 IU of vitamin D. It varies with skin, place, weather and time of day.

Food: about 10 to 20%

Food is the small part.

About 10 to 20% of vitamin D comes from food. It’s hard to get enough from diet alone.

Get outside first.
It’s free.

September to April: get outside early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Keep the sunscreen on when the UV is 3 or higher.

May to August: get outside around noon, face, arms and hands uncovered.

Vitamin D3 + K2 is for long hours inside.

A vitamin, not a miracle.

What it does

  • Vitamin D contributes to normal calcium absorption.
  • Vitamins D and K both contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.
  • Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
  • That’s what these vitamins do in the body. It isn’t a promise about how you’ll feel.

What it doesn’t do

  • You won’t feel it. It isn’t a stimulant.
  • More vitamin D isn’t better.
  • It’s a dietary supplement, not a medicine.
  • It doesn’t replace time outside or a balanced diet.

Why K2 is in there.

Vitamins D and K both contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.

The evidence for taking the two together is limited. They’re in one capsule because it’s one thing to remember. Some people think K2 helps you absorb D3. Nothing we’ve read supports that.

You’ll read much bigger claims about K2 online. They haven’t been proven, so you won’t read them here.

What’s in one capsule.

Vitamin D3 (colecalciferol)25 µg (1,000 IU)
Vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7, all-trans)90 µg

25 µg is the maximum daily dose of vitamin D the Dietary Supplements Regulations 1985 allow in a dietary supplement, and that’s what’s in here. NZ clinical guidance uses a lower daily dose, 400 IU. More isn’t the goal: one a day. Don’t take with other vitamin D products unless advised.

You’ll find cheaper. Some carry more K2. If you only want vitamin D, plain D3 can cost under 10c a day. The extra pays for K2 in one capsule and a lab report on this batch. Don’t want those? Buy the plain one.

Adult at a dinner table in the evening, with the NoWhey Vitamin D3 + K2 bottle beside the meal

One a day with a meal containing fat. Done.

Both vitamins are fat-soluble, so food with some fat in it is the sensible default. Dinner’s fine. Keep the bottle where you eat.

Questions people ask.

Can’t see yours? Email sales@nowhey.co.nz and a real person will answer.

Who is this for?

People who get little direct sun: long hours inside, night shifts, skin covered outdoors, darker skin, or the deep south over winter. If you’re outside most days, skip it.

Isn’t this only a winter thing? Why would I buy it in November?

If you’re outside all summer, you can wait until autumn. We’d rather you did. If your days are spent indoors, that doesn’t change with the season.

I have darker skin. What do I do?

Expect it to take longer. Naturally dark skin may need three to six times more sun exposure, and brown skin needs more than pale skin too, though how much varies. Sun safety doesn’t change: get outside early or late, sunscreen on when UV is 3 or higher. Unsure? Ask your GP.

Will I feel it?

Probably not. It isn’t a stimulant. If you’re after something you can feel, this isn’t it.

Why 1,000 IU? Isn’t 400 enough? Isn’t more better?

25 µg (1,000 IU) is the maximum daily dose of vitamin D the Dietary Supplements Regulations 1985 allow in a dietary supplement, and that’s what’s in here. NZ clinical guidance uses a lower daily dose, 400 IU. If you’d rather take that, look for a lower-dose product. More isn’t the goal.

Does sunscreen stop you making vitamin D?

No. Keep wearing it. Real-life sunscreen use doesn’t stop your body making vitamin D.

Should I get a blood test first?

Most people don’t need one. NZ clinical guidance doesn’t recommend testing in most cases, and it usually isn’t funded unless you have a specific condition. If you’re worried, talk to your GP.

My GP prescribed vitamin D. Do I need this as well?

Don’t add this on top without asking your GP.

I’m on warfarin or another blood thinner.

Not unless your doctor agrees. It contains vitamin K, which can affect how warfarin works.

I’m already on a multi.

Read your label. Ours has 20 µg of D3 plus K1 and K2, so pick one. Don’t take with other vitamin D products unless advised.

Can you take too much vitamin D?

Yes. It’s stored in the body, so more isn’t better. Stick to one capsule a day.

Pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18?

It isn’t a pregnancy supplement, so ask your healthcare professional first. It’s for adults. Keep it out of reach of children.

Where’s the lab report?
