Supplement Guides & Research

These guides exist to help you make a decision, not to sell you a scoop. Each one is written in plain English and built on primary research and our own batch test results. Where a study is small or a finding is uncertain, we say so. Where a number comes from a lab report, we link to it. No hyped claims, no invented rankings and no borrowed marketing copy — just what the evidence supports, what we measured, and what it means for the protein you actually buy.

Why trust this

Every batch is lab tested

We test every batch for heavy metals, protein content and microbial contaminants, and we publish the measured results in full so you can check them yourself.

Testing & quality

The guides are only as good as the testing behind them

Several of these guides cite our own batch results. Those numbers live on one page, in full, so you can check our work rather than trust a claim.

View independent lab testing

  • Heavy metals. Plants take up trace metals from soil, so plant proteins can carry small amounts of lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury. We measure them each batch and publish the figures rather than describing the result in words.
  • Protein content. A label protein figure is an average, and enforcement allows for analytical variation. We publish the measured protein for the batch in the tub, so you can see the actual number, not the average.
  • Microbial screening. Standard finished-product checks for microbiological safety, run per batch alongside the metals and protein assays.

Our heavy-metals benchmark is USP General Chapter <2232>, a voluntary international benchmark for finished dietary supplements. We choose to meet it. It is not New Zealand law, and NZ food regulation does not require testing against it.

About this content

How we write these guides

John Birrell, Founder of NoWhey

Who writes them

Every guide is written and signed by John Birrell, NoWhey’s founder. If a guide is later corrected or expanded, the change is noted on the article.

What we cite

Primary sources first: peer-reviewed studies, standards documents and regulator guidance, linked directly. Where a study is small or a result is a statistical trend rather than a clear finding, we say that in the text.

Our own numbers

Any figure about our products comes from a batch-specific lab report published on the testing page. We do not quote product results that are not published.

Update cadence

Guides are reviewed at least once every 12 months, and sooner when new research, a new standard or a new batch result changes the answer.

What this is not

General information, not medical advice. These guides are not reviewed by a registered dietitian or clinician. For a medical concern, speak with a qualified health professional.
